AMARGOSA IMMERSION
April 22-24, 2022

LEARN MORE

The Mojave Project will host a weekend of curated programming and field activities in the Amargosa Basin region east of Death Valley National Park from April 22–24, 2022.  This event is in conjunction with the spring 2022 exhibition of the Mojave Project at UNLV’s Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, Las Vegas, Nevada. The weekend program includes a special screening of Erich von Stroheim’s 1924 silent film masterpiece GREED at the historic Amargosa Opera House on Saturday, April 23, 2022. The Minneapolis-based ensemble, Ipsifendus Collective, led by multi-instrumentalist composer Paul Fonfara, will perform their original score for the film commissioned by Mojave Project. This event will include a pre-show cocktail/hors d’oeuvres at the Amargosa Hotel’s historic dining room.

The GREED screening and performance event is one of several field activities organized by Kim Stringfellow within the Amargosa Desert. Other activities include a guided peek into Devils Hole; a meet-up with Susan Sorrells, whose family founded Shoshone, California, during the late nineteenth century (Sorrells is currently leading an initiative to list the Amargosa Basin as a national monument); a fireside reading by celebrated author Claire Vaye Watkins, who was recently touted by the Los Angeles Times in October 2021 as the “new voice of the American West;” plus a hike into the Amargosa Chaos with University of Oregon geologist Marli Bryant Miller as our guide. The final schedule of activities will be confirmed before the end of the year.

Up to forty tickets will be available for this audience-supported weekend event. Transportation, lodging and meals will be the responsibility of individual participants (we encourage carpooling). Below is a list of lodging options, including area campsites. Because we anticipate a large group, we will ask that participants book reservations for lodging well in advance due to the popularity of the Death Valley region as a tourist destination. Ticket sales are final and non-refundable. We will not refund ticket purchases for failure to book lodging well in advance.

We will follow COVID-19 protocol for indoor events requiring masking, proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID test within three days of the event for all participants attending the GREED screening. This event is for participants 18-years and older. No pets, please.
